Wasps are the bane of any outdoor activity, especially parties, barbecues, and other events that involve food. They will nest under eaves and patios, in the attic and crawl spaces, and other places that allow them to keep cool and dry, but still have easy access to food and water.

A wasp attack can be minor if there are only one or two stings, but thirty or forty stings can kill a person. If a wasp swarms you or threatens you, cover your head and run. A wasp will call the rest of the nest to come help defend the nest if it feels the nest is threatened.

Types of Wasps

Wasps can be the paper nest-making (vespid) variety, or they can be a beneficial garden variety. The paper nest variety is the kind that can be dangerous to people because they can sting multiple times. Other variations are garden-type wasps, which help keep unhelpful types of bugs at bay in the garden. Yellow jacket wasps are also territorial and will attack if they feel their nest is threatened.

The Process of Wasp Control Services

Common Issues Caused by Wasp Infestations

  • Painful Stings & Allergic Reactions

Wasp stings represent one of the most immediate dangers associated with these territorial insects. Unlike honeybees, wasps can sting repeatedly, delivering painful venom with each attack. For most individuals, stings cause localized pain, swelling, and redness lasting several days. However, approximately 5% of the population experiences severe allergic reactions, including difficulty breathing, rapid pulse, and potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis requiring immediate medical intervention. Multiple stings, even for non-allergic individuals, can trigger systemic reactions due to the cumulative venom dose. Russell Pest Control takes these health risks seriously, prioritizing the swift removal of wasp colonies from residential properties, particularly near doorways, play areas, or high-traffic outdoor spaces.

  • Damage to Property & Structures

Beyond their health risks, certain wasp species cause surprising structural damage to homes and buildings. Paper wasps and hornets construct nests from chewed wood fibers, gradually breaking down wooden siding, deck materials, and fence posts. These insects sometimes chew through drywall or ceiling materials to expand their colonies when building nests inside wall voids or attics. Their nesting activities can damage insulation and create entry points for moisture, leading to secondary problems like mold growth or wood rot. Additionally, abandoned nests left untreated attract other insect pests and can contribute to ongoing infestation cycles. Our technicians are trained to identify early signs of structural impact, address wasp activity before significant damage occurs, and adequately remove nest materials to prevent future issues.

  • Disruptions to Outdoor Activities

Wasp populations dramatically impact the usability of outdoor spaces, turning relaxing environments into anxiety-inducing areas where constant vigilance becomes necessary. Summer gatherings around pools, patios, and barbecue areas frequently attract foraging wasps drawn to food, sweet beverages, and bright colors. Their aggressive defense behavior, when threatened, creates legitimate safety concerns, particularly for families with children. Commercial properties, including restaurants with outdoor seating, parks, and recreational facilities, face significant operational challenges when wasp populations increase seasonally. Our customized treatment programs focus on restoring the enjoyment of outdoor spaces through strategic nest removal and preventive measures targeting preferred nesting locations, creating environments where outdoor activities can proceed without constant disruption from these territorial insects.

  • Risk to Pets & Livestock

Domestic animals face particular vulnerability to wasp attacks due to their curious nature and inability to understand the danger these insects present. Dogs frequently disturb ground-nesting species like yellowjackets while exploring yards or during walks. Horses and livestock may accidentally disturb nests in barns, stables, or along fence lines, triggering defensive swarming behavior. Multiple stings can cause severe animal reactions, including facial swelling that potentially obstructs breathing. Veterinary intervention becomes necessary when pets receive numerous stings, particularly around the mouth, throat, or eyes. At Russell Pest Control, we recommend comprehensive property inspections for clients with animals, paying special attention to areas where pets frequent and identifying nests that might remain undiscovered until an unfortunate encounter occurs.
