One Man, One Truck, Never Looked Back.
On March 1, 1996, Steve went out on his own, and in his first nine months, he sold $88,000 of service going door to door, with a wife who was an amazing partner and full-time mother to their two young daughters. His first big account was a 67-store Domino's Pizza contract. The second year, the company grossed $129,000. He never looked back.
Why He Started
Steve started Russell Pest Control because the company he worked for wasn't doing service the way he knew it could be done — they were a volume operation, putting route counts ahead of customers. He built his company on the opposite idea: know the family, know the property, know the pest, and keep customers forever. "I want their business forever," he says. "The key is knowing the family, the dogs' names, the kids' activities." Thirty years later, that philosophy is why the company retains the customers it does — including families who signed on in the 1990s and are still on the schedule today, now having their grown children's homes serviced too.
That philosophy shows up in the small things. Steve teaches every technician the same rule: learn the biology of the insect, and you'll know how to control it. He runs low-drift, targeted treatments instead of blanketing a property; he refuses to make a chemical stronger just because someone asks; and he'd rather tell a customer they don't need the big program than sell them one they don't. Volume companies are bigger, he'll tell you — but never more profitable, and never more trusted on the routes Russell actually serves.
The Second Generation
What started as one man going door to door is now a family corporation working with its second generation. Steve's son, Steven Russell Jr., started as a part-time technician, returned full-time, and became a partner in 2025 — and he's the public face of the company's next 30 years, working alongside technicians Ernesto and Jorge. The name on the trucks is Steve's father's name, carried forward in his honor. The goal Steve names for the next twenty years is simple: that the market remembers Russell Pest Control for the highest standard and integrity, and that his son carries the family name forward — servicing the children who were born when Steve was their family's technician.
Ask Steve what matters more to him than the money, and the answer is immediate: building relationships and the trust that comes with them. "The money always follows," he says. It's not a marketing line — it's how a six-year tech with integrity and an unstoppable work ethic turned a door-to-door start into a family corporation that now serves a second generation of customers. The vans say Russell because that's the family name, and the plan is for them to keep saying it for decades.
Why Russell, Not a Volume Company
A Real Person Answers
Owner or office staff during business hours; after hours, the line forwards to Steve's cell. No AI, no call center, no robots — when you call, you reach someone who can actually help.
The Same Technician, Almost Every Visit
Russell keeps drivers on the same routes on purpose, which is why customer retention runs as high as 98%. Your technician knows your property, your pets, and your history — and that knowledge compounds into better results.
No Door-to-Door, Ever
Russell has never knocked on doors and never will. The company grew, and still grows, through referrals and relationships measured in decades — not summer sales crews.
Honesty Over High-Pressure Sales
No initial fees, no contracts on residential service, and a 15-day re-treat warranty, promising instead of a salesperson. Steve's rule: lead with thirty years of experience, never with the word "free."
