Mosquito Control in Goodyear, AZ — Start With the Water You Own
On a Goodyear property with a pool, the largest body of standing water is the one in the backyard. Running, it's a non-issue. Off for a season, mid-renovation, or between owners, it's the most productive mosquito site on the street. Goodyear is specific about what you do with pool water, and that specificity is a better place to start than another gallon of product.

Into the cleanout on your own lot
The authorization sends the water to the sanitary sewer cleanout on your own property. All of it stays on site. None of it goes into the street, the alley, or the right-of-way. You may irrigate with it, provided it doesn't run off into the road or onto the property next door. And there's a pH window the water has to sit inside before it goes anywhere.
Two failure modes it heads off
Both of them are mosquito problems. Water pushed into the street ends up in a gutter, a scupper or a low spot somewhere downhill, on ground that belongs to no one in particular and gets looked at even less. And a pool that's half-drained and abandoned because the job got complicated is the worst possible outcome: too little water to run the pump, more than enough to breed.
The seasonal quirk worth knowing
The City's own water services guidance suggests avoiding a large pool fill in January, February, or March, because sewer charges are based on first-quarter water use, and a fill in that window follows you all year. One side effect we see: it nudges pool work toward late spring, which is exactly when mosquito pressure starts climbing. If your project is landing in April or May, the water side of it deserves more attention than it would in November.
So the sequence matters more than the product
Drain it properly, refill it promptly, get the pump running. A pool that goes from full to empty to full inside a few days is not a mosquito site at any point.
The Six-Week Gap
The shape of it is always the same. Somebody decides to resurface, or the pump finally fails, or a house changes hands, and the new owners haven't sorted out the service yet. The pool comes down to a foot of water. The contractor is three weeks out, then the tile is wrong, then it's five weeks, then it's July.
Nobody in that story did anything careless. It's a scheduling problem that turns into a biology problem, and the household usually doesn't connect the two until the evenings on the patio stop working. By then the neighbors have it too, because a foot of still water in full sun produces a great many mosquitoes and they don't respect a fence. The fix is unglamorous, and it's free: if the gap is going to be longer than a few days, the water either goes all the way out or it keeps moving.
Water First, Then Where They Rest
The pool and its equipment pad
A pumping cycle and a dry pad take the property's largest water body off the list in about a minute. A wet pad, a dripping backwash line, or a filter pit holding water puts it right back on.
The tedious list
Saucers, the wheelbarrow, the tarp over the trailer, the toy that fills and never empties, the trash can lid upside down behind the shed. This is the tedious part, and it is genuinely where most of the reduction comes from.
Irrigation and valve boxes
Below-grade boxes can hold water for weeks after an unnoticed leak. We lift them and look. It's the single most-missed source on a Valley property, and it's on almost every lot we walk.
The gutter line and the roof
A blocked section holds water long enough to matter, and you can't see it from the ground. If it needs clearing, the report says so, and it isn't our work to do.
Read the shade as well as the water
Adults spend the day out of the sun, in dense planting, under low foliage, against a north wall. That map is different from the water map, and it's the half that treatment actually reaches.
Treat the resting places, on a program
Station-based service, checked and refilled, placed where the adults shelter and not simply where you noticed one. Pressure moves with rain and with your irrigation schedule, so each visit re-reads the property.

What the risk actually is
Here's the honest shape of it. Maricopa County had an exceptional year in 2021, with 1,487 human cases reported; the largest outbreak before that was 355 cases in 2004. Those are counts of diagnosed illness rather than of infection, and most infections are never diagnosed at all: about eighty percent of people infected never develop symptoms, and CDC analysis puts roughly thirty to seventy milder cases against every severe case identified. The true number of infections in an outbreak year runs far above the reported count. There's no vaccine and no specific treatment, so prevention is the whole game, and anyone who feels unwell after mosquito exposure should speak to their own doctor. Two things you control that no yard treatment can: an EPA-registered repellent, and long sleeves at dawn and dusk. We're a pest company, so the medical half is short, and it isn't ours. For the small share who do get seriously ill, the CDC is direct, and we'll quote it rather than paraphrase it: seek immediate medical attention for high fever, neck stiffness, muscle weakness, confusion or tremors. Do I really need authorization to drain my own pool?
If the City is your water and sewer provider, yes, and it's free. Where does the water actually go?
To the sanitary sewer cleanout on your property, and it stays on site. Streets, alleys, and rights-of-way are all out. You can irrigate with it if it doesn't run off, and the pH has to be inside a stated range first.
Our pool is off for a renovation. What do we do?
If the gap is a few days, don't worry about it. If it's going to be weeks, take the water all the way out instead of leaving a foot in the deep end. Standing water in an empty pool is the one situation we'd ask you to avoid entirely.
Can we just put chlorine in it and leave it?
Chlorine in water that isn't circulating does very little for very long. Movement is what makes a pool inhospitable. A pump running a few hours a day beats a shock treatment in a still pool every time.
The pool next door is green. What can we do?
Talk to them first if you can, because most green pools are somebody away, ill, or waiting on a pump. If that doesn't work, Maricopa County Environmental Services is where a green pool gets reported, and they've supplied mosquito-eating fish free of charge. Call them to confirm what's running this season.
Does a yard treatment stop them coming over the wall?
No, and nobody's does. What a program does is reduce what's breeding on your lot and thin out the adults resting on it. On most properties that's the difference between an unusable evening and a normal one.
We've emptied everything and it's still bad.
Then the water is off your property and you've done your half. We can still make the yard less hospitable to the adults arriving, and the walk usually finds where they're coming from within a couple of hundred feet.
What about a misting system?
We don't install them. A timer runs product whether or not anything is out there, and it does nothing about the source. Put the money into the water and a serviced program.
Is there a season?
Warmth builds it, and rain spikes it, so the monsoon weeks are the loud ones. The quiet months are when the water work is easiest to do, which is the argument for doing it then.
Our irrigation valve box is full of water. Does that matter?
Yes, and thank you for looking. A below-grade box holding water is a breeding site with a lid on it, and it usually means a slow leak worth fixing for its own sake.

Sort the authorization out with whoever supplies your water and sewer, then drain it, refill it, and get the pump running, in that order and without a long gap in the middle. If the plaster or the equipment needs work first, take the water out entirely while you wait rather than leaving it partly full.
